Help Us Beautify and Revitalize Oklahoma City The Peace Park Project involves revitalizing 7 blocks of surplus city property on NW 10th Street. Following a design plan created by The University of Oklahoma, Division of Landscape Architecture, the parks will involve the community in creating and maintaining areas representing different states and countries. This will allow children to develop cultural awareness, communication skills, a sense of geography, project planning and completion, and the skill of cooperation. Community involvement, even something as simple as planting a tree, can give a child a sense of belonging or purpose. Accomplishment creates self-respect and motivates further involvement and education. Community involvement gives a child roots and reason to remain or come back to Oklahoma with their skills and education. TO ALL OKLAHOMA CITY COMMUNITY LEADERS We encourage everyone including Churches, businesses, community organizations, and school classes to adopt a part of the project and participate in "The Avenue to Peace". The city of Oklahoma City recently cleared over 60 older homes leaving vacant lots ready for beautification and community use. The 10th Street Community Fund proposes to build a series of mini-parks with flags representing every American state and many foreign countries. We wish to enable our community, and especially the children, to learn about different cultures with hands on experiences, planting flowers and trees, placing memorial plaques and pavers, and installing peace poles. Each major continent will be represented by a beautiful plaza. Parallel pathways (one for walkers, another for joggers/ cyclists) will wind through the mile stretch. The Avenue to Peace will be not just a street, but a road to world peace. The Friends of the Avenue to Peace believe that if each person creates peace within, it will spread around the world. Peace is like holding a light within of love, forgiveness, tolerance, truthfulness, and respect. It is stepping outside one's limitations or personal problems to embrace a project or goal, to beautify, to edify others, to spread respect around the world. To "pay it forward" so to speak, by doing something proactive and living with a daily motivation to reach a goal. The Prayer-Meditation Garden is planned for the 1800 block of NW 10th. This will be a non-sectarian garden for persons of all faiths. On the same block the Centennial Plaza and Amphitheater will provide a place for people to assemble.
